With Friends Near the Fountain in the Wind

There’s mist all over us, on the stranger, too.

He’s like Robeson—his massive frame—but broken,

slouching, like a ghost fugitive from the bayou.

“Good ladies,” he calls, gone so fast he can’t see us nod.

And the girl by the path down from the fountain—she keeps

playing the same monotonous sad tune on her saxophone.

I wish her horn was spangled and the hat, which she

put on the ground, full of jingle and bucks.
